Charles Stanley preached a very meaningful sermon today. He gave a testimony about his mother, Rebecca, and how she brought him up. It was a powerful reminder that parents lay the foundation for their children’s lives.

Charles was born in a tiny house. By the time he was 17, he had lived 16 different places because his mom was single and had to work and find childcare for him. His father died when he was very young. Life was not easy.

But Rebecca, who was later abused by Charles’ stepfather, used to kneel and pray with Charles and read the bible with him every night.

She taught him to trust and obey. For as my friend Gabriel tells me, “God is never late and he doesn’t make mistakes.”

It’s one of the most important lessons we can teach our children: to trust God and obey him when he speaks to us and leave the consequences up to him. It is so much easier to avoid disappointment and deal with the realities of a difficult life when we believe God is in control.
